Prompt #1: THE BARGAIN TROPE. Answer all parts of this prompt in the proper order. If you wrote about the trope in the Discussion Forum, you may quote your own post. Just be sure to reference it (Discussion Forum, thread #, and date).
1. Explore the Bargain trope as a theme with a moral message, describing in detail at least two stories from different categories (folktale/myth/fairy tale, novel, short-story, movie, TV series, graphic novel, or narrative videogame). At least one of the stories must be selected from examples in Chapter 2. You may choose another story from outside the class material for your 2nd example (outside research is acceptable, with reference).
2. Describe the stories, emphasizing who does the bargain, what the expected outcome is, and what the actual outcome is.
3. Analyze the moral message, and evaluate it. Do you agree that it is a valuable lesson? Why or why not?
Remember: The only research of outside sources allowed for this essay (Prompt 1 or 2) is research of links provided in the Modules, plus research related to the 2nd example, but it is not required. If there is a source you’d like to include, but it isn’t linked in the Modules, send Prof. Rosenstand a message before submitting the essay. All quotes have to be clearly indicated by quotation marks, even quotes from the textbook. If you refer to or quote sources linked in the Modules, you have to provide a list of Works Cited/Bibliography (see above).
