The goal of the assignment is to be able to synthesize information from a source of media, outlining the most important aspects of the media and relating it to the course content and at least one outside source of media. This means you should have at least 3 citations in your paper: (1) outside media, (2) the class content, and (3) the documentary. The point of this assignment is to show me that you can take a variety of different sources and be able to explain what is happening using information you gained from this class.
I want you to be able to relate that information by connecting vocab, course themes, and theories. You should be explicit on the connections to class (cite the course material!). If you include something from class (say for example, vocab) you should define it. The outside media can be a video, article, news story, podcast, etc., but please make sure that 1) it is a credible source (not wikipedia) and to also cite your source. Again, the goal of this assignment is to be able to look at some form of media, and critically discuss it using materials you’ve obtained in this class. You have the freedom to draw connections any way you choose to do so, so pick something that you find interesting or that relates to you in some meaningful way.
The more information you can bring in from the course, the stronger your paper is going to be. You do not need to do an extensive review of the outside source of information, but you should be able to connect key aspects together. You also need to do the following:
1) Briefly summarize the movie. The summary should be a general overview, not explicit. The heart of the paper is to draw connections to what we’ve discussed in class. A way to do this is to spend the first body paragraph summarizing the video, and the rest of the paper connecting it to the course.
2) Use at least one theory in your paper. We cover a wide range of theories in this class (especially in the first section). How do they relate to your media? You would want to both define the theory, and be explicit in it’s connection to the video/article.
3) Include various course concepts (each should be defined and cited in the paper). You want to treat the reader (me) like I’ve never heard these terms before and therefore you are teaching me what they mean and how they all connect. For example, you might say something like this: “blah blah blah is an example of sexism. Sexism is defined as an “attitude or behavior that discriminates against one sex, usually females, based on the assumed superiority of the other sex” (Women in Criminal Justice, 2024). Sexism can be either subtle, meaning less obvious, or blatant, meaning more obvious. Blah blah blah is an example of blatant sexism.”
4) Clearly bridge multiple sections of the course together (for example, if you discuss victimization among college women, you could also touch on sexual victimization of girls (which we covered in Section 1)). It would be helpful to go back through your notes to see what you can incorporate. Again, the more you can include, the better your paper will be!
5) CITE all of your sources (APA is preferable). You need both in-text citations and a reference page. You will need to cite everything including the lecture notes, the article you used from the course, and the outside references. Failure to do so constitutes plagiarism. You can cite the course in the following ways:
blah blah blah (Jackson, 2024) or blah blah blah (Women in Criminal Justice, 2024).
Make sure to include a reference page! Any time you make a definitive statement in an academic paper, you need to include a citation. Even if you are putting it in your own words, a citation should be included. You should have at minimum 3 citations (Class notes, the documentary, your outside source). You can use more, but make sure to include citations.
A good way to start this paper is to outline the movie’s main concepts and start connecting them to different course concepts. This movie touches on a lot of things we’ve discussed in class, so you should be able to draw in information from a number of lectures (not just one). Once you’ve done that, you should start looking up articles using either the library or google scholar that also connect to your main points.
I strongly encourage you to use the SCAA writing center. They have a quick turn around and can give you helpful writing/editing suggestions. Once submitted, your paper will be reviewed by Turnitin and will also be checked for AI. Such violations are considered academic misconduct. Please avoid any plagiarism or AI use.
You want to make sure your writing is clear and easy to follow (include an introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion paragraph). Your intro should tell me what the entire paper is going to be about. The conclusion should summarize the main points you’ve made in the paper. Please spell check and proofread before you submit. You have the opportunity to re-submit your reflection by the end of the semester if you choose to do so, however this is not required. I will provide you with feedback that I encourage you to review.
Finally, I have provided you with some questions to think about on Canvas while watching the film (in the same module as the link to the film is). These questions are only meant as a helpful tool, not as what should necessarily be addressed in the essay. Please do not go point by point addressing these questions as this is not the goal of the assignment.
Your article reflection should be in either a word document or PDF format when it is submitted.
