After reviewing the Features, Advocacy & Opinion lecture and reading the corresponding chapter in the textbook, write an op-ed on behalf of your client. For this assignment you need to:
·
Think like a newspaper editor, and select a topic of interest to the publication and its readers
·
Make sure your topic is “significant, local (if appropriate), balanced, timely, and something your client is uniquely positioned to write about
·
The topic can be something that readers are talking about OR something they should care about
You will select the topic and newspaper in which it should appear. It can be local/regional publication like The Buffalo News, or national like The New York Times.
Length: No more than 700 word (but try to do it with 500 words)
Deliverable: Op-Ed and planning sheet (identify ONE media outlet – consider checking out their website to see what opinion pieces they’ve published in the past) Here are some tips/reminders to get you started:
·
Identity one media outlet in your planning sheet
·
Research that outlet’s editorial section and see
what kinds of op-eds they’ve published
·
Assignment & Purpose (what you want to
achieve through this communication)
Your aim is to make one clear argument—one
clear statement of informed opinion, or a specific call for action—that you
support with evidence, on one very specific issue. You are aiming to persuade
your audience that your position is the correct one, and that competing
positions are incorrect or somehow faulty.
·
What’s an op-ed? Op-eds are a way for
citizens/organizations to contribute directly to debates by publishing an
informed opinion piece, traditionally located opposite the editorial page of a
newspaper (hence “op-ed”). It is a short essay—that makes and supports one
primary argument. It also addresses or refutes counterpoints to this argument.
·
Audience (who you are communicating to)
You are writing this reflection to the
public – specifically to newspaper readers who are educated and interested. You
can assume some knowledge about the topic (i.e. climate change) but remember
that your readers are not specialists. You should define technical terms or
complex concepts but remember that your readers are short on time and attention
span.
