Overview
This project involves two components:
Notes: Describe data pertaining to a specific child, separating out what you see and hear from your inferences about the data.
Analysis: From a strengths based perspective, analyze how multiple factors have supported the child’s physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development. Also, propose a learning context that would be equitable, affirming, and meet at least three of the child’s developmental needs.
First
Notes: You will need to gather data about a child. You may gather data by interviewing a parent, observing a child, or watching a video of a child. As you interview or observe, you will take about one page of notes.
If you conduct an interview, the notes should include your relationship to the interviewee, the questions you asked the interviewee, the interviewee’s responses, and your initial inferences about the interviewee’s response. Here is a possible framework for interview notesLinks to an external site..
If you do an observation (either in person or via video), the notes should include a description of the setting, a description of the child, a step by step description of what you saw and heard, and your initial inferences about what you saw and heard. Here is a possible framework for observation notesLinks to an external site..
Next
Analysis: Next, you will analyze your data and develop a response to the following prompts. Your response should cite at least SIX class resources!
Strengths: What specific strengths does the child have with respect to their physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development? What are three specific things that they can they do well? Relate the child’s strengths to core class concepts.
Supports: What factors have supported the child’s physical, cognitive, and social emotional development? Relate these factors to core class concepts.
Context: Propose a developmental context that would be equitable, and meet the child’s developmental needs (physical, cognitive, and social-emotional). Discuss how the developmental context is equitable AND meets the child’s developmental needs. Basically, you can make up an ideal context! Alternatively, discuss how the context the child was in was equitable and met their developmental needs.
Again, be sure to accurately incorporate and cite relevant class resources in your response. Your response should cite at least SIX class resources!
Format
The notes portion of the paper should be about 2 pages long. The analysis portion of your paper should be about 4 pages long (double spaced). If your assignment is longer, or more involved, it’s OK. We will engage with whatever you create.
