In higher education, students are educated in distinct racial contexts, which are shaped by the external and internal environment. External influences include the impact of governmental policies and initiatives, as well as socio-historical forces. This may include financial aid programs, affirmative action policies, court decisions regarding collegiate desegregation, and larger issues or events in society that influence how people view race relations and diversity (Hurtado et al., 1998).
Internal influences on campus racial climate can be understood within four dimensions resulting from institutional practices and educational programs. These dimensions include:
● History of Exclusion
● Structural Diversity
● Psychological Climates of Perception
● Intergroup Relations on Campus
Explore each of these dimensions as they relate to the Black student experience in higher education.
