You may already know of a debatable issue you are interested in researching, or you may have a question about an issue you’d like to learn more about and answer. You might have been intrigued by some of the issues we have discussed or read about this term or topics that have been brought up in your other classes or among family and friends. Use your curiosity as the starting point for this research/argument assignment. Pay attention to the scope of your intended argument, though; for example, the capital punishment debate is very interesting, but for your short assignment you would probably limit your essay to a discussion of one or two aspects of the issue, maybe the costs or deterrence effect. Your topic can also be very local—just be sure your audience will be interested and that you can meet the research requirement. Remember that you do not have an argument if you cannot find any opposition to your ideas, so choose your paper topic accordingly. You may NOT write on abortion, legalizing marijuana, or gay marriage.
Your job for this assignment is to construct an argument in a1000-word essay (not counting your Works Cited) that tries to convince a specific audience to share your opinion, perhaps even take action to solve a problem. Use a variety of evidence appropriate to your topic: personal experiences, examples, testimony of experts, statistics, etc. You must use at least four different sources in this paper and cite them using the MLA in-text system. At least one must be a scholarly, peer-reviewed journal article and all others should be at least serious popular sources. You must also acknowledge any tools you use in the process of researching and writing this essay. This would include any AI tools used for brainstorming, etc. As you develop your research question and ideas and plan your essay, be sure to consider your audience and your overall purpose, which is to argue, not just explain. (Note: After completion of your paper, you will do a follow-up project that recasts your same argument in a multimodal format, so keep that in mind as you choose your topic and do your research. You might want to bookmark images, videos, etc.)
