Signature Assignment Description:
This assignment is designed to provide exposure to the various kinds of writing that you may encounter in your academic and professional life. It is also intended to demonstrate your ability to examine issues at various system levels and integrate your learning in this class. Finally, this paper is designed to help you demonstrate critical thinking skills through your writing as well as be able to pose a research question and then be able to answer it.
You will identify a behavior relevant to your interests, develop three research questions related to the behavior, and conduct a literature review in order to address your research questions. Scholarly sources will be used extensively; the text may be cited but will not count as a scholarly source in the number needed.
The first aspect of the signature assignment will be a identifying a chosen behavior you would like to examine in more depth. It might be considered an abnormal behavior – i.e., violence in the school setting – or a “normal” developmental behavior – i.e., single parenthood. You will need to provide sufficient information to describe the behavior (i.e., what it is, when it happens, what length of time is involved, what triggers it, etc.). Any and all aspects of the influence of diversity should be identified. Does culture play a role? Or family traditions (i.e., wine with every formal family dinner will influence the role of alcohol in celebrating family)? While this piece of the microtheme is driven by your interests, please remain objective in your language (no use of “I”) and write to an intended audience who need information that is rational rather than persuasive.
