Classroom culture involves creating an environment where students feel safe and free to be involved. You can have the best classroom culture, but conflict is still going to happen. It is important for an early childhood special education teacher to have tools to address and positively de-escalate these conflicts.
Part 1: Case Studies
Write a 150-200 word response to each of the “Student Conflict Resolution” case studies. In your response, identify strategies that support developing social skills, problem-solving techniques, and conflict resolution abilities of each student. Cite scholarly sources to support your responses.
Part 2: Reflection
Although the students in the case studies are of different ages, the same type of conflicts can occur in any classroom. Select a Grade K-3 that you would ideally like to teach. Considering the behaviors described in the case studies, answer the following questions in 250-500 words:
How are you going to create a classroom culture to promote positive social interactions?
How will you collaborate and communicate with students and families to build a positive learning culture?
How do the behaviors described in the case studies affect your classroom culture?
What are 2-3 strategies that support developing social skills, problem-solving techniques, and conflict resolution that you might use in your future professional practice?
