Assignment Question
For your assignment this week, you will be creating a county level community assessment of a county of your choosing in New Jersey. (BERGEN COUNTY) When you go to the website: https://www-doh.state.nj.us/doh-shad/community/snapshot/Builder.html, you will be working on the tab “Community Profile.”
For the intro, you can gather information about the county you select by going to Google. Type in “XX county, nj, demographics.” The search should lead you to Census.gov QuickFacts for that county. REPORT COMPONENTS: 2-3 pages
A. Introduction: 1 paragraph
- a. Geographic location of the county within the state
- b. Total population
- c. Population characteristics of residents including race/ethnicity, sex, and age (can be grouped as <18 yrs, 18-64 yrs and 65+ yrs, depending on what data is available)
- d. Interesting facts (ex: largest city, home to Washington’s Headquarters, renowned for silk production in the 1800’s)
B. Health topics tables: 4 tables (see example below)
- a. Separate tables for each health topic including all health indicators for that topic
C. Results: At least 4 paragraphs – 1 for each table
- a. Review each table and comment on the comparison of your county to NJ State data. Highlight important differences. Summarize the data; do not describe every value for every indicator.
D. Conclusion: 2-4 paragraphs; Be sure to cite literature and other sources of information when making your conclusions.
- a. Across all tables, summarize what health indicators in your chosen county are better or worse compared to the State. Comment on times when the indicators are the same.
- b. Why do you think these indicators are better or worse? What about the county can explain these findings?
- c. What is your overall assessment of the health of the county and why?
- d. What can be done to improve the indicators that are worse and the health of the county? What are the barriers to health improvement?
