Southern Secession Writing Assignment When the 13 American colonies broke away from Great Britain, they all passed an Ordinance of Secession, that mostly just said they were leaving. But they also released a Declaration explaining the reasons behind their actions. During the American Civil War, several southern slave states also attempted to break away – this time from the USA. And likewise, they all issued individual ordinances, but also several of those states issued Declarations of Secession to explain their actions. Write a 600-700 word typed essay on these primary sources that answers the question: How did the states explain justify secession? Be sure to include a unique title, a thesis (argument), supporting evidence, and a conclusion. Cite your sources. List the word count at the end. And number your pages.
