Assignment Answer
Introduction
In this reflective essay, we will delve into four forum posts that I wrote during the semester, as documented in the Word document titled “A3 Reflective Journal Notes.” Additionally, I will draw upon “My Thoughts on Peacekeeping,” another Word document that provides insights into my personal reflections on those posts. The purpose of this reflective essay is to critically examine my learning journey throughout the semester, emphasizing the quality of thought and insights gained during the course. While discussing these forum posts and my thoughts, I will use relevant literature to support my points and highlight differences in opinions where applicable, maintaining an academic tone throughout.
The Challenge of International Peacekeeping
In my first forum post, I discussed the challenges associated with international peacekeeping efforts (Bellamy, 2018). I acknowledged the importance of peacekeeping missions in maintaining global stability. However, I raised concerns about the complexities of these missions, such as navigating cultural differences and dealing with local politics. Reflecting on this post, I can see that I was initially focused on the practical aspects of peacekeeping, considering the real-world challenges that arise in such operations.
Drawing upon literature, I find that many scholars have also highlighted the multifaceted nature of peacekeeping missions (Dyrud, 2020). According to Bellamy (2018), successful peacekeeping often requires a deep understanding of the local context and the ability to adapt strategies accordingly. My initial thoughts align with this perspective. Furthermore, I noted that the involvement of regional actors can be both advantageous and problematic, a point also discussed by Dyrud (2020). My evolving understanding throughout the semester allowed me to appreciate the complexities of peacekeeping on a deeper level.
I’d like to add that understanding the cultural nuances of the regions where peacekeeping missions are conducted is crucial for success. The ability to navigate complex sociopolitical landscapes, languages, and traditions is often an overlooked aspect of peacekeeping. Scholars like Dyrud (2020) emphasize that peacekeepers should not only be well-versed in the global politics of the conflict but also understand the local intricacies that can have a significant impact on the mission’s outcome.
Peacekeeping Success Stories
In my second forum post, I discussed instances of successful peacekeeping missions, such as the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). I highlighted the positive outcomes of these missions and the role they played in restoring peace and stability (Fortna, 2019). Upon reflection, I can see that I was keen to emphasize the positive impact of peacekeeping efforts.
Supporting this perspective, research by Fortna (2019) and Doyle and Sambanis (2018) highlights that successful peacekeeping missions can significantly reduce the chances of a return to conflict. My initial thoughts resonated with these findings, showcasing the importance of peacekeeping in global affairs. However, as my learning journey continued, I also encountered literature that discussed the limitations of peacekeeping, shedding light on cases where these missions were less successful.
It’s worth mentioning that the success of peacekeeping missions often depends on several factors, including the consent and cooperation of the involved parties. Fortna (2019) argues that when conflicting parties are genuinely committed to peace and cooperate with peacekeepers, the chances of success are significantly higher. This aspect emphasizes the delicate balance between the use of force and diplomacy in peacekeeping efforts.
Critiques of Peacekeeping
In my third forum post, I explored critiques of international peacekeeping (Howard, 2019). I considered the arguments put forth by critics who question the effectiveness and impartiality of peacekeeping missions. I also touched on issues related to the misuse of power by peacekeepers in some instances. My reflection on this post indicates that I was open to considering opposing viewpoints and critically evaluating the concept of peacekeeping.
Drawing on literature, Howard (2019) and Chesterman (2018) have written extensively about the challenges and critiques of peacekeeping, highlighting issues such as the potential for peacekeepers to exacerbate conflicts unintentionally. My evolving perspective acknowledges the necessity of critically examining peacekeeping efforts to ensure their effectiveness and adherence to ethical standards. While my initial thoughts were focused on the positive aspects of peacekeeping, I gradually recognized the importance of being aware of its potential pitfalls.
Critics of peacekeeping often point out the delicate ethical considerations involved in peacekeeping missions. Chesterman (2018) underscores the importance of maintaining a balance between intervention and non-interference. Peacekeepers must adhere to ethical principles, respect local sovereignty, and avoid taking sides in the conflict, even while striving to maintain peace. This ethical dimension adds another layer of complexity to peacekeeping.
The Role of Technology in Peacekeeping
In my fourth forum post, I explored the role of technology in peacekeeping efforts (Autesserre, 2018). I discussed the potential benefits of using advanced technology, such as drones and surveillance systems, in enhancing the effectiveness of peacekeeping missions. Reflecting on this post, I can see that I was enthusiastic about the prospects of technology in improving peacekeeping operations.
Relevant literature, including articles by Autesserre (2018) and Carment et al. (2019), supports the idea that technology can play a pivotal role in peacekeeping. These scholars highlight the ways in which technology can improve information gathering, communication, and situational awareness for peacekeepers. My initial thoughts align with these findings, emphasizing the positive impact of technology on peacekeeping efforts. However, my evolving understanding also led me to consider the ethical and privacy concerns associated with the use of technology in conflict zones.
Technology has indeed revolutionized peacekeeping in many ways. Advanced communication systems enable peacekeepers to coordinate and respond more effectively to emerging situations (Carment et al., 2019). Surveillance technology can provide crucial information for decision-making and maintaining situational awareness in complex and often dangerous environments. However, the use of technology also raises significant ethical concerns. The potential for misuse, privacy violations, and the unintended consequences of technology in conflict zones are topics that demand careful consideration.
Conclusion
Throughout this reflective essay, we have explored my journey of learning and reflection during the semester, as based on four forum posts and my thoughts on these posts. I initially started with a positive outlook on peacekeeping, highlighting its importance and successes. As the semester progressed and I engaged with relevant literature, I became more aware of the challenges, critiques, and complexities associated with peacekeeping. My perspective evolved to appreciate the multifaceted nature of peacekeeping, the importance of critically assessing its effectiveness, and the potential benefits and ethical concerns of technology in peacekeeping.
This reflective essay serves as a testament to my growth in understanding the field of peacekeeping and my ability to critically evaluate complex topics. It demonstrates the importance of considering diverse viewpoints and maintaining an academic tone in discussing issues of global significance. My thoughts and insights throughout the semester have contributed to a deeper appreciation of the challenges and opportunities within the realm of international peacekeeping, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of this crucial field.
