First, it alerts the reader to a policy issue and introduces why that policy issue is important and second it outlines solutions to the policy issue. For this policy brief I want you to play the role of a behavioral health policy wonk for a presidential candidate or state legislator. You are to advocate for a change in the behavioral health care system using the videos and reading material as background information. For example, you might advocate for Universal Coverage using private insurance, or public insurance. You might advocate for expanding Medicaid, or a public option on the health care exchanges. You should be clear about what you think the problem is with the current system and how the change will address that problem. You also need to use behavioral health examples both in the problem and solution discussions. The policy brief should be organized as follows. Introduction: The introduction of the policy brief contains a brief description of the problem and a summary of the conclusions. The rest of the brief will be used to back up the claims made in this introduction. Background: The background describes the nature of the problem, some statistics that detail the extent or scope of the problem and provide a rational for changing or keeping the current policy. Supporting arguments or analysis: Once you have set the stage for your candidate, show how this information leads logically to the conclusions/recommendations you have provided. Style and format: The language of a policy brief is simple and clear. Stay away from jargon and use everyday words. Use active sentences rather than passive sentences. For example: “The evidence supports the use of vaccines” rather than “This is evidence to support the use of vaccines” (1) The policy brief is 1 page with 1 inch margins. Keep it at 1 page, you will not get credit for anything over 1 page. (2) Paragraphs should be single-spaced and should be separated by a double space. (3) You may use any standard conventions for the layout of your memo, including numbering, bullets, indentation, etc. Do address the memo to your audience at the top of the page.
