Abstract
Malnutrition is a significant public health concern, with potentially severe consequences for overall health. This paper defines malnutrition and explores its connection to the development of Kwashiorkor, a disease characterized by protein deficiency. By examining the physiological effects of Kwashiorkor and the relationship between specific nutrients and the disease, this research highlights the importance of proper nutrition in preventing and treating malnutrition-related illnesses. Nutritional recommendations for managing Kwashiorkor are also discussed.
Introduction
Malnutrition is a condition that arises from an inadequate intake of essential nutrients, which can lead to various health problems. One specific disease resulting from malnutrition is Kwashiorkor, primarily associated with protein deficiency. This paper aims to define malnutrition, explain the physiological effects of Kwashiorkor, examine the relationship between specific nutrients and the disease, and evaluate nutritional recommendations for combating it.
Malnutrition and Kwashiorkor: Malnutrition can result from an imbalance of nutrients in the body, either from excessive intake or inadequate consumption (Stuhldreher, 2022). Kwashiorkor is a severe form of malnutrition caused by sufficient calorie intake but insufficient protein intake. It is prevalent in regions experiencing famine and can affect individuals of all ages, with a higher prevalence among children aged 3 to 5 (McCarthy & Yale, 2023).
