We hear a lot about a global shift to Electric Vehicles, by which we generally mean Battery Powered Electric Vehicles (BPEWs), not hybrids or plug-in hybrids. Let’s look at this a little further.
1) Assuming that all consumer vehicles and light trucks in the US were to migrate to BPEVs, how what would be the reduction in the yearly CO2 emissions in the US.
2) What would be the increase in required yearly generation of electricity in the US to charge those vehicles?
3) Could that yearly increase in electricity demand by provided solely by local (i.e. generation near the demand, for example home rooftops) photovoltaic solar generation?
4) Could that yearly increase in electricity demand be provided by a rectangular grid of photovoltaic solar generation in the desert southwest (e.g. Arizona or Nevada). What area (square miles) of photovoltaic generation in that region would be required, and what might be the environmental, economic, and cultural factors associated with such a solution?
Deliverable: An individual, well wriften and well-reasoned tech note containing the answers to these questions, with Fermi-like computations to support your answers. Fermi computations should be to no more than two significant digits, and should, in turn, be supported by clear assumptions. Assumed values should be verified, with references, wherever possible. Hint: Wikipedia is not a reference!
Formatting. Use Tech Note format, with 1.5 line spacing. The note, not including any references or appendices or bibliographic information, shall not exceed 10 pages. You may write less, as long as you answer the questions, show your computations, explain your thinking, and answer the questions. The length may be extended: watch Blackboard for any updates. IEEE reference format is acceptable.
Show your work, writing your math well with an appropriate math editor. Show me everything you’ve learned about technical writing. Your target audience is your Capstone peers
Academic Integrity rules: You may discuss the problem amongst yourselves, but the preparation and analysis of the equations and the written answers must be done individually.
Due date and submission: The Fermi tech note is due on Monday, May 1, 2023, at 11:59 PM (this is the correct datel) as shown on the detailed schedule available in the syllabus tab on Blackboard.
Submissions must be in PDF format and submitted to the appropriate link in the Assignments tab on
Blackboard.
