1. Identify and read several human diversity-related news articles about the country of Colombia. These articles should be published by “bona fide,” independent, professional news organizations whose primary purpose is to report the news. The news organizations can be U.S. and/or international-based, [e.g., New York Times, CNN, Reuters, BBC, Associate Press (AP), etc.]or local news organizations based in the countries or on the continent you research. If you use a news media outlet other than one listed above, write a one sentence description justifying that your news outlet is an “independent, professional news organization.”
– Do not use academic journals, encyclopedias, atlases; websites belonging to governments, travel agencies, the United Nations, human rights organizations, and/or personal blogs. If you are not sure if a website is a professional news organization, look it up and read it about before using it or use the ones listed in the previous paragraph. Just because an organizations purports to be reporting “news” does not mean it is a news organization.
News articles should be those published within the past five years. Articles published outside of this time range will not count for this assignment.
From the news articles you read, each one should include one of the 5 topics. You should have no more than one article per category. Clearly identify which diversity category goes with which article you include.
(a) gender and/or gender identity
(b) sexuality and/or sexual orientation
(d) social class
(e) age and/or age cohorts
(g) religion and/or spirituality
2. Write a paragraph summary of each article you select. Include full article citation information as a header (e.g., at the beginning) of each paragraph that minimally includes (a) article title, (b) author (if available); (c) bona fide news organization name (e.g., New York Times; (d) if accessed on the web, publication website (hotlink optional), and (e) publication date. You may use a style manual or format of your choice. An example of one format option is:

Remember to be sure your sources are all news organizations. (Excluding citation information, summaries that are 3 or less lines are more likely to get a maximum a minimum of 2 points; ; summaries that exceed 7 lines are more like to get the maximum points of 4 points). Number your article summaries #1 – #5.
3. Write the paper on “What does your set of five article say about the news coverage of human diversity issues in your country or on your continent? How does your assessment compare and contrast with what you think you know about related human diversity issues in the United States? How does what you learned in this assignment reinforce or challenge your previous assumptions about this country? How might what you learned influence communication strategies you make when discussing this country with others and/or planning a trip to this country?”
