Outline a multi-level health promotion programme of interventions that aims to address obesity as a health issue in Urban Cameroon among women of reproductive age.
In your answer you should:
1. Briefly describe obesity as a health issue and how it impacts on people’s health in urban Cameroon.
2. Propose a health promotion programme made up of THREE interventions to address obesity in the location you have described. This should include ONE intervention that focuses on a population level change, ONE that focuses on a community level change, and ONE that focuses on individual level change. Using a systematic project planning approach include the aim(s), objectives, intended outcomes, intervention methods, key activities and other key features of your programme. Justify why you have selected these intervention methods drawing on existing evidence. Explain how your proposed interventions will work together to address your chosen issue.
3. Outline how the programme will be monitored and appropriately evaluated.
Suggested approach or Some words of advice
• You must focus your assignment on ONE of the health issues listed above. Choosing a topic that is not on this list or discussing more than one health issue will result in a drop of one grade.
• The location for this assignment is not specified. This allows you to select one that interests you and/or that builds on your previous professional experience or on your reading and research.
• In Part One you should set the context and define your ‘problem’ – including demonstrating why and how the chosen health issue is a concern for the population in your chosen location. Part One is only worth 15% of the marks but is important for the sections that follow. Once you have a good understanding of the ‘problem’ the potential ‘solutions’ will be easier to identify.
• You might want to consider targeting a specific sub-population group with your programme. If you do so, make sure you justify and evidence this.
• In Part Two, ensure you describe THREE interventions that address change at the levels specified in the task instructions. Explain how they work together to form a single programme to address your chosen health issue. You should justify and evidence why and how the three different intervention methods are relevant and appropriate to targeting the population in your chosen location.
• A budget limit and time frame for the programme of activity has not been specified. Although it is not a requirement to include a budget or a time frame, if you decide to include either, they should be relevant and realistic.
• In Part Three, outline an appropriate monitoring and evaluation structure for the programme of interventions. You are not being asked to design a study or trial. Instead you are expected to outline how your programme of interventions will be monitored and evaluated, and who might be expected to take on such evaluation and monitoring tasks within a programme.
• You are strongly advised to use literature and information sources, in addition to the textbook. Relevant additional information can be obtained from recommended module readings, websites of public health agencies, academic papers, and government sources (e.g. national health ministries should have relevant data, reports or policies).
• Be sure to fully and accurately cite all references and resources used to complete your assignment, including reference to your textbook, when required.
• Use evidence to support your arguments.
• Keep discussion and explanations clear and focused, omitting unnecessary detail that does not contribute to answering the assignment question.
• This is an essay assignment. Therefore, please avoid the over-use of bullet points when presenting information. Responses should be discursive. Use of tables and figures is encouraged, if it helps to clarify or advance your arguments. Please see guidance on use of tables and figures below.
• As you think about your assignment you are encouraged to use the assignment discussion forum on Moodle to ask questions of other students and tutors. However, your tutors will not be able to provide advice or feedback on specific details of your individual work.
• Do not forget the importance of carefully structuring your assignment, with clear sections that follow in a logical sequence.
