EMERGING MARKETS POLICY RESEARCH PAPER (Individual Assignment):
• Identify an emerging market economy which experienced at least one crisis or shock in the last 10-15 years. (between 2008-now)
• Describe in detail the economic implications of that crisis for the country.
• Highlight the role of its central bank in dealing with this crisis (or crises) i.e., policy actions taken, or reforms implemented. Also, discuss the interaction of central bank’s reforms with the fiscal policies of the period i.e., whether fiscal policies were supportive or counteractive of central bank’s actions.
• Analyze and discuss the key economic variables which underwent major changes or improvements during the period of your analysis.
• Finally, recommend a path forward for the economy and identify any foreseeable risks associated with your recommendations. Assume you are an economist and making these recommendations to a policymaker like the central bank governor or the Finance Minister.
Instead of a lengthy research paper, students will write a short, well organized, concise, sharply focused, and persuasive policy paper. The paper should be double-spaced, have 1” margins on all four sides, use 11-point font, and not to exceed 8-10 pages. If applicable, you may attach a maximum of two pages of Excel output, or graphs, or tables. The Excel output should lay out your key assumptions, mechanics of your calculations, and conclusions
