Paul English 160W Project #2 RESEARCHED ARGUMENT “Writing for Social Justice” (Spring 2023)
Definition of social justice: Justice practiced by a society, especially how it is practiced by and among the society’s different social classes.
You will choose a current issue of social justice in the U.S., research it, and define a research question on the topic. The podcasts you connected with in Project I are a great source of topic suggestions. Social Justice topics focusing on various themes of artificial intelligence (AI), are especially encouraged. You may want to go back into the Discussion Forums to brainstorm ideas for this essay. Your topic selection will be approved by the instructor in advance. Of note, some of the best writing for this essay comes from topics you may not be familiar with. As you will be conducting research, exploratory writing can be most engaging.
Some questions to consider while researching and writing about your topic: • Why is this topic controversial? Controversial (adj): relating to or causing much discussion, disagreement, or argument • What are some of the causes? • What are some of the effects? • Who does it affect? (who = social class, race/ethnicity, age range) • Is it happening over the U.S., or are there regions where it is more of (or less of) an issue? • What needs to happen for it to change? • What is being done about it? What is NOT being done about it? • Who (person, group or organization) might have the power to improve or fix it?

Topics to avoid: abortion, politics, gun rights, LGBTQ+ rulings, immigration, Title IX, climate control, January 6, euthenasia, social media, minimum wage, racial inequality, gender inequality, obesity/body image, universal healthcare, Affordable Care Act. Be sure to have your specific research question approved in advance.

This is a minimum 1800-word argument paper addressing a question on a topic addressing social justice. The topic must be approved by the instructor in advance. A minimum of five outside, peer-reviewed sources are required. I highly recommend that you consider mapping your paper before you begin – know where you are going in the paper before you begin.
