Question: Social history of a psychiatric diagnosis
Many have argued that psychiatric diagnoses and labels of “mental illness” work to
govern and regulate people. Demonstrate how a particular diagnosis has been used
as a form of individual and/or community social control. The diagnosis may be
historical (e.g. homosexuality) or contemporary (e.g. gender dysphoria, borderline
personality disorder, schizophrenia). Apply an intersectional analysis in which race,
gender, sexuality, and/or class are shown to interact in the management and
policing of those labeled mad. You must go beyond what has been discussed in class.
