Essay Guidelines:
Students will prepare at least 6 pages of typed double-space essays and turn them in by the published deadlines. The 6 pages include the title page, main body, and no more than a one-page reference page. In other words, one for the title, one page for reference, and 4 pages for the content. While at least 6 pages are expected, you may go a few pages beyond the 6-page minimum if necessary.
This is a formal research paper. It is NOT an opinion or editorial piece. It must have an introduction, thesis, main body, supporting materials, conclusion, and references. Use an Arial font with 12 points.
A research paper requires a thesis statement.
Your thesis must be in one short sentence (If A + B then C). It must have an Assumption of cause-and-effect relationships.
With the factual data (not opinion), one must prove the accuracy of the thesis, i.e., if “A” + “B”, then the result is “C”. If your thesis is not structured correctly, the rest of your findings and research may not be meaningful. Not all questions are scientific.
•“Which toothpaste is best?”
•“What is the meaning of life?”
Without the thesis (hypothesis), fifty points (on 100 points scale) will be strictly applied with no exceptions.
The purpose of a research paper is to pose a new question and then prove or disprove factual information with the new findings and solutions. Describing or repeating already-known information is not a research paper. Research must lead to new findings and theories. Scientific research will involve the followings:
*Observation,
*Posing a question,
*Constructing a hypothesis after additional observation and analysis,
*Designing research/experiments,
*Analyzing the results and making a conclusion,
*Publishing the results.
Please DO NOT copy and paste some repetitious, useless, distorted, and/or wrong information from the Internet, books, and journals as a research paper. A research paper must contain new ideas (Assumption of cause-and-effect relationships) to be proven or disproven.
Attention: It is expected students spend 5 hours or more on this project during the semester. If you do not have the time (at least 5 hours) to follow the instructions and prepare your essay, please consider completing other optional projects to earn 100 points. Students are expected to keep the log of hours they spend and report honestly the total hours on the first page (next to your name). You may underestimate your hours, but please do not overestimate the total hours. Your work will easily indicate the quality and hours you spent. Please note total hours spent on the project do not guarantee full credit.
After preparing an outline, you will introduce your subject and state a thesis (verifiable hypothesis) in the 1st paragraph of your introduction with red fonts.
Your research paper must be sourced. In other words, identify thoughts, information, ideas, data, and facts that are not your own. Our department of Political Science requires APA style citation. To learn about APA style, please click on this link.
The Internet is, of course, a quick and easy way to obtain quick information, but it is often difficult to verify information obtained from the Internet because it is often not primary source information. It is a shortcut, but ultimately you short-change yourself by not developing research skills. It is better to get into the practice of doing actual research by utilizing the library, or a bookstore, reading newspapers, and magazines that cover your research topic.
All sources must be sorted out in separate categories with the following titles:
*Web Sources (2 at least are required)
*Print Journal (2 at least are required)
*Print Books (2 at least are required)
