Instructions:
• Start with a brief discussion of the article you selected as it relates to the topic; why was this article chosen? The introduction of the article may be helpful here. Tip: Do not use ‘as cited in’ references to other studies. Instead, paraphrase what the author(s) of your paper has (have) said, and cite that with the page number.
• Refer to your article by the authors’ last names and the date of publication e.g. Bashir and Rosenbloom (2015) studied the relationship between……
• summarize the subjects and methods, defining any specialized terms or concepts, but not overly long. Omit any details that aren’t needed (often descriptions of subject details), but do explain the basic procedure of the study so we know what the design was.
• explain the results, with specific effect sizes for any group differences you are discussing and make it clear what the effect size means!!! (see decoding stats file for more assistance)
• You don’t need to discuss all comparisons, select what is relevant.
• Do NOT include p values, F and t stats, Chi squares, etc..
• Do NOT use the phrases “significantly different than, higher then, etc.”, always refer to the actual size of the effect.
• When you refer to the content of the article, avoid QUOTES and use PARAPHRASES. This doesn’t mean just to rearrange the article words in a new order, you must actually write in your own words. Each paraphrase needs to be followed by a citation in APA format that includes the page number. Be very careful to truly paraphrase, copying from articles is one of my pet peeves!!
• Conclusion. This is the final part of your assignment where you discuss the meaning of the article you summarized in the overall context of the assignment topic. It doesn’t have to be long, not more than a paragraph (or two at most). If you relate to material in the notes or readings, you can reference these without attaching them.
• Make sure any conclusion is supported by research, though you can of course critique the research design if you think the article authors made mistakes in their design and/or conclusions.
• Usually this can all be done in about 4-5 good paragraphs.
• Add a correct APA reference for your article. #1 Mistake: Incorrect capitalization in the article title!
• Attach your article as a pdf.
