Write a lesson plan and commentary for a 15 minute English lesson which practices literacy skills or communicative skills (that is, the goal of your lesson must be to develop or enhance your learners’ literacy or communicative ability and enable them to read, write or communicative more effectively in English)

Your lesson may be designed for a group minimum six students with a proficient level of English from different backgrounds (eg, some students may speak other languages, although English will be their first or second language). Choose a group of students from Primary, Secondary, Further or Adult Education according to your interests.

Although your lesson will be mainly focused on improving the students’ literacy or speaking skills, it is important that you keep language in mind when you are preparing and planning your lesson plan. What language can you highlight as integral to the lesson? What language can you elicit from your students? What elements of language or language skills might students improve by participating in your class?

Where possible you must include any materials that you devise (you can put them into an Appendix after your lesson plan) and if you source materials from the internet you must include the URL. If you use real materials (realia) make sure you list them in the Resources section on your lesson plan.

2) You need to demonstrate that your lesson is supported by theory and good practice from any of the weekly readings, recommended websites and any other good quality references you have found. Remember to use sources which are reliable, for example international and national educational institutions, agencies and publishers.

Do not forget to include a bibliography which will not be included in the word count for the assignment.

3) Write a commentary after each section of your lesson plan to explain and justify the choices, decisions and strategies in your plan. The lesson plan and cimmentary template itself and the example lesson plan and commentary will indicate what is required. Keep the commentary short (brief notes with bullet points are sufficient).

Here are the suggested steps you should follow towards submission of your lesson plan and commentary:
Write your class profile and commentary
•With the profile in mind think of a focus for your lesson which would motivate and interest your students (
• Write your learning outcomes (what you want students to be able to do by the end of the lesson)
• Write your commentary on the learning outcomes
List the resources you will need to support your teaching (including white board, pens, data projector, handouts, realia and so on
• Write your commentary on the resources
• You may wish to leave the board work and commentary on the board work until you have decided on the stages of the lesson
You may wish to leave the anticipated problems and possible solutions until you have thought through the stages
• Think through step by step what will happen in the class from the moment you enter the room until the students leave (remember to include a realistic timing for each stage and the interaction between the teacher and the students using T and S – see example lesson plans)
• Most of the reading you need to do will relate to the approach, techniques and strategies that you use during the stages (eg communication, TIT, STT, elicitation, checking understanding, circulating, monitoring, fluency, accuracy, error correction, feedback and so on)
• Put references to reading and websites in your bibliography
• Put materials into an appendix (where possible) (after the bibliography) (e

3) PROBLEMS/SOLUTIONS: Recognition of, and possible solutions to, any anticipated problems. (10%)
4) STAGES: Clear stages to the lesson which indicates the purpose of each stage, the interaction (T-Ss, S-S) and realistic timing for each activity.

5) SUPPORT FOR LEARNING: Logical sequence of input, elicitation and activities to optimise success, supported and demonstrated by understanding of the theory and practice of effective literacy and/or language teaching.
(40%)
6) IMAGINATIVE/INNOVATIVE: Interesting, imaginative and/or novel approach and activities. (10%)
