Effective literacy instruction is based on incorporating the science of reading research into classroom practice when
teaching the five components of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension).
Assessment of each essential component is key to identifying gaps in student learning and ensuring students are making progress. Since the five skills build upon one another, it is important to ensure students master one before moving on to the
next.
For this assignment, design two infographics that outline the five essential components of reading instruction (phonemic
awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension). One infographic will focus on birth-K and the components:
phonemic awareness, phonics, and vocabulary. The second infographic will focus on Grades 1-3 and the components:
vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. According to your state standards, identify critical skills students at each
age/grade range should attain in each of those components. Include the following for each of the essential components of
reading instruction in each infographic:
Description.
Critical skills.
Describe a tool to assess student skills in the component.
Following the infographics, write a 250-500 word explanation of the following:
What is the role of working memory in learning to read?
How can teachers help develop working memory in their students?
What are some signs and causes of auditory processing issues in young students?
How can teachers support students with these auditory processing issues?
