Explain the background of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. Why was it needed and was
it expected to work? Explain the three elements of the First New Deal and give examples of
programs that worked to achieve each part. What sort of criticism did the New Deal face? What
made the Second New Deal more about reform than the First? Give examples of reformative
programs in the Second New Deal. The New Deal did not succeed in ending the Depression, but in
your opinion, was it still effective? Give examples to support your opinion.
2. The home front of World War II is unique in American history. Explain America’s role as “The
Arsenal of Democracy” and how that impacted the war as a whole. Also, describe how the role of
government expanded and how that impacted the war effort and American lives. How did the use of
propaganda play into the home front? What sort of sacrifices were made by the American public?
Were they okay with that? Why?
3. Women and minorities played major roles on the home front during World War II. Describe the
experiences of each of the following: women, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and
Japanese Americans. What hardships did each face? What contributions did each make towards the
war effort? For each, describe whether or not they achieved any gains towards equality during the
war.
