In this Analytical Essay, you will learn about The Northwest Passage (NWP). The NWP is a new sea route that connects the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean, through the Arctic Ocean which has been frozen over for most of human history. As you will see, The NWP is becoming navigable and has the potential to affect shipping routes, resource extraction, culture and environmental health in the northern hemisphere. In this Analytical Essay, I would like for you to develop a deep understanding of The NWP’s history, changing environmental conditions, and potential impacts of its use on culture and environment. Most importantly, you will focus on analyzing the territorial claims that The NWP is ‘internal waters’ versus an ‘international strait,’ and compare that claim to the wider related territorial claims made by various countries with coastline in the Arctic. In writing this essay, you will be answering the following research question: who owns The Northwest Passage, and why?
