Write a letter to old, wiser self

Students will write a letter from the perspective of being at the end of the lifespan. Imagine that you have grown to be a healthy, wise old person and are reflecting over your life. In the role of “older, wiser, self” write a letter identifying TWO significant transitions across the lifespan from birth to elderhood that impacted you and the life you chose to live. In chronological order (e.g. birth, infancy, early childhood, etc.) explain the impact of those significant transitions on your life and expand upon whether you successfully navigated those transitions. How did that continue to affect the next developmental phases? Use the letter to respond by offering comfort, advice, and helpful instructions for getting through each period of life based on what you have learned from old age. What would this wonderful, old, wiser person suggest to help get through these phases of life? Be sure to incorporate developmental psychology concepts to demonstrate mastery of course content. For example, if reflecting on childhood, one could discuss the impact of caregiver attachment styles, Erikson’s psychosocial crises, Piaget’s Cognitive Developmental Theory, etc.

Be mindful that this paper is a culmination of all that you have learned about the different development stages up until this point in this course. As such, in addition to your reflection on personal experiences you should incorporate specific knowledge learned about the different developmental stages. For example, if you choose to reflect on Adolescence (which many students do) I would expect to see concepts such as puberty, Erikson’s Identity versus Role Confusion, crowds, clique, imaginary audience, etc. Write about what applied to you during this time. Papers are not shared and follow the rules of confidentiality, so speak as freely as you wish.

The paper should be 4-5 pages in length including a title page. Points will be deducted for any papers whose body of writing is less than three pages (not counting title and/or Reference pages). There is no requirement or expectation for scientific research. As you will be demonstrating knowledge learned from the text, the book may be your only reference unless you so choose to incorporate outside sources. If so, be sure to cite properly.
