HIST 1301 Paper Topic and Requirements
*Paper must have:
–Five paragraphs: Introduction, Body Paragraph 1, Body Paragraph 2, Body Paragraph 3, and
the Conclusion.
–A title that is underlined or italicized.
–A Works Cited page.
*Other requirements:
*Paper must have parenthetical citations—(page #)—at the end of the sentence before the
“period”—for paraphrased (in your own words) AND for quoted information.
*The assigned book, upon which the paper is to be based, is the only source that may be cited
and referred to in the paper and in the Works Cited.
*Paper must be written in past verb tense.
*Intro.: Must feature the proper historical context which consists of: the complete book title,
the author’s full name, the time period, location (s), key issues, key individuals, description of
each of the major individuals, and a thesis, which must include the paper topic questions below.
*Additional paper requirements are in the syllabus including 1000 words minimum, written in
Times New Roman 12 pt. font, double spaced, etc., and TO BE SUBMITTED TO ME as a PDF
via the LSC D2L drop box (click on “Course Activities” in D2L then “Assignments”) before or
on Monday, March 20, 2023 before 11:30 p.m. CST. The drop box will be open, beginning at
12 a.m. CST on Monday, March 13, 2023 and will close at 11:30 p.m. CST on the due date of March
20, 2023. No late papers, unless there is an emergency; in the event of an emergency, you
may email me your paper from only your LSC email account no later than 11:30 p.m. CST
on Monday, March 27, 2023. No exceptions. This is why students are regularly reminded
to read the book and to write drafts in advance. Only 1 submission is permitted. The
paper is required to be original to the class and to the semester. REQUIRED Writing
Assignment Paper Topic Questions: Using Andres Resendez’s book, The Other Slavery:
The Uncovered Story of Indian Enslavement in America, students are to answer the
following questions: 1) According to Resendez, what main factor contributed to the large number
of indigenous peoples’ deaths at the beginning of the European conquest of the Caribbean?
What role did smallpox play in the demise of indigenous peoples and when did he state that this
occurred? What are his explanations for this? 2) What were some of the brutal characteristics of
the enslavement of indigenous peoples in the Caribbean and in North America?; and 3)
Specifically until when were some indigenous peoples in the U.S. enslaved? Why was their
enslavement able to persist even after the abolishment of slavery in the U.S. by the 13th
Amendment?
**Please answer the above questions using fact-based information and specifics from the
assigned book.
*Reminder: You should answer each of the above questions in each of the 3 body paragraphs.
*Conclusion: you may summarize your thesis using different wording and include an additional
viewpoint on paper topic. One suggestion is to explain why studying such a topic is important
and its relevance for today.
