Topic: ”College, Trades, and Service: How Socioeconomic Factors can Play a Role”
Thesis: What impact does socioeconomic status have on the postsecondary choices of young Americans and what decisions do they make as a result?
Objectives:
-To build capacities to read and interpret print, electronic, and visual texts at an advanced level.
-To strengthen skills in defining a complex problem for an audience and situation of your choice, attending to the diverse facets of the writing situation (logos, ethos, pathos, kairos).
-To practice and build mastery in utilizing research strategies such as locating and selecting reliable sources, analyzing diverse and competing source standpoints, summarizing sources, and using a standard bibliographic format (MLA).
Instructions:
Explore a topic that can be evaluated on clearly-defined criteria, yet a topic that is still contested by different viewpoints. Use a university library search engine to locate a minimum of five reliable sources that represent these different viewpoints ( and which you will present in your Annotated Bibliography). Situate your research exploration in terms of kairos—the social, cultural, political, and economic contexts that have exacerbated and intersect with the problem(s) your topic addresses.
Your essay should be clearly organized for a specific audience and purpose, including relevant and diverse standpoints, and placing competing ideas in dialogue. Be sure to run spellcheck and grammar-check before submitting your final paper.
