For your reply posting, select a posting made by a classmate, and explain how the ethical principle identified by your classmate is addressed in one of the other two codes of ethics and how/why this other code addresses the principle in a similar or different manner. For example, if your classmate has explained how the American Association of Public Opinion Research code of ethics addresses Voluntary Participation, your reply posting should explain how Voluntary Participation is addressed in the Society for Research in Child Development [or Economic & Social Research Council] code of ethics. For instance, you might explain how/why this principle was enumerated in more detail by the other code of ethics, or how the principle was addressed differently in one code as compared to the other code.
Be sure that your postings (both original and reply postings) include references to our textbook as well as ideas from the e-reserve chapter on ethics (Babbie) in the required reading list above.

While conducting research of any kind, it is always important to maintain an ethical standard. Participation in research should be voluntary, and therefore subjects must give their informed consent to participate in the research, and researchers must disclose their identity (Schutt, 2021). All subjects or participants should base their participation with a full understanding of possible risk that may be involved with the study. All consent forms should be very clear and easy to understand but also very detailed. Participants should be well informed about the process that is going to take place during the research so that they can consent voluntarily if they choose to with the information they were given. The new federal regulations implemented in 2019 also require that the consent form begin with a summary of “key information” about voluntary participation, research procedures, and study risks and benefits (Schutt, 2021). The code of ethics of the American Association of Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) (2015) also states that researchers should not misrepresent their study and should recognize that participation is voluntary. Participation should be made freely and without coercion. Claims about the study should not be misleading and truthful answers should be provided to all those who will be participating. This is especially important in medical research so that participants are aware of risks associated with the research so they can make well informed decisions on whether to participate or not. If participants are not given informed consent their participation can be misled and therfore wouldn’t be voluntary.

“This is especially important in medical research so that participants are aware of risks associated with the research so they can make well informed decisions on whether to participate or not.”
Although this is a valid point, it would not apply to the code of ethics of the American Association of Public Opinion Research since they focus on the gathering of public opinion (e.g. from surveys and interviews) and are not involved in medical research.
____
One key issue in the American Association of Public Opinion Research code of ethics is that in addition to the idea that “Participation should be made freely and without coercion” (as Melissa wrote), the code also states that “Participants may freely decide…whether to answer any presented question or item” (American Association of Public Opinion Research, 2015, p. 2).
This is an important point because a participant may agree to participate in a survey, but then during the interview/survey the participant becomes uncomfortable with some of the questions. By stating that participants should have the option “whether to answer any presented question or item” means that voluntary participation applies throughout the interview/survey, rather than just being something that is required before the interview/survey begins.
