Comparative Analysis of Stylistic Movements in the Pictorial Arts
Understanding and distinguishing between artistic styles and movements is an important component of art appreciation. A little basic training will enable you to begin to distinguish between an artistic masterpiece and pictorial art of a more mediocre quality. This exercise will help you develop the ability to identify major artistic styles and contrast them with one another.
From the following list of stylistic movements in the pictorial arts, choose two movements to research and compare: Abstract Expressionism, Baroque, Cubism, Expressionism, Impressionism, Neoclassicism, Pop Art, Post-Impressionism, Realism, Rococo, Romanticism, Surrealism.
To research the two movements you select, a good resource is Artcyclopedia.com. Any major national museum website is a reputable resource as well. You may also want to gather information from other reputable sources. If you have a question about the credibility of a website, please email me and ask.
In your research, find the origins, basic characteristics, development, and significant artists of each movement. After analyzing each movement, be sure to compare them as well. You may use individual works of art to support your points.
Incorporate at least 5 of the following art words in your writing: unity, variety, lalance, symmetrical balance, asymmetrical balance, emphasis, subordination, scale, proportion, and rhythm.
We need to ensure you utilize only credible websites so your research will reflect academic integrity. The assignment should be a typed 2-page document, 12-point font, Times New Roman. Please don’t forget to include a Title Page and cite your sources.
