Minor Project #2: “Twelve Angry Men” (50 points)
Your minor project involves the analysis of a film, particularly looking for concepts relevant to problem solving and decision-making.
You will make personal notes regarding role behaviors, leadership, groupthink, and critical thinking as you view the film. (Note: these individual notes will be turned in and graded).
Then, as a group, discuss the following topics: role behaviors, leadership, critical thinking, Groupthink. The results of your discussion should be presented in the form of a group paper (minimum length of 4-5 pages). Your paper needs to note which group members contributed to each section/paragraph. You could have all names or just one depending on who wrote in that part.
Example:
Sarah and Thomas
Throughout the jury’s deliberation, critical thinking becomes a major part of deciding…
This project and paper is to be done collaboratively, based on the discussion of each of the following items. DO NOT USE ANY RESOURCES TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS OTHER THAN YOUR FELLOW GROUP MEMBERS. Any use of outside material found online (or anywhere else) will result in a grade of zero and a report of academic dishonesty.
1. Describe any role behaviors you see evidence of in the characters.
2. What sort of leadership did you see in this film? Did the designated leader provide the needed leadership? Who did provide the most leadership and how did he lead?
3. What type of evidence seemed convincing to the various jurors?
4. In what instances do the members of the jury use critical thinking to evaluate the evidence that has been presented to them? What behaviors counterproductive to critical thinking do you observe? What fallacies do you observe? What are the effects on the group of these fallacies?
5. What evidence of Groupthink do you observe during the jury’s deliberations? What do the jurors say and do that suggests they are experiencing Groupthink? How are these tendencies toward Groupthink overcome?
6. How would you assess the decision-making of this jury? How could it be improved?
