For this summary and response essay, you will summarize and respond to the article “What Would Plato Say About ChatGPT?” by Zeynep Tufekci. You will first summarize Tufekci’s argument accurately, and then you will include your own response/opinion on a topic from the article. Tufekci talks about a lot of topics—artificial intelligence (AI), ChatGPT, technology, plagiarism, writing, changes to education, etc.—so feel free to choose any one of them to focus your response on. You can agree or disagree, or both, with the author. You can incorporate your own personal experiences in relation to the topics brought up.
You should incorporate at least two direct quotes from Tufekci in your essay.
You should also do external research in the Morton College Library databases, The New York Times or other newspapers or credible magazines, or Google Scholar. You must incorporate one source, in addition to Tufekci, into your essay. You must quote from this additional source two times. This second source should be current—meaning, written within the last five years.
You must include in-text citations when you quote from Tufekci and your second source and a Works Cited page that includes a full citation for both. Follow MLA formatting.
Audience: You are writing for someone who has not read this article.
Purpose: To clearly summarize the Tufekci article and to clearly state your opinion on the issues she raises.
Structure
Introduction: The introduction should ease the reader into the topic; it should set context or provide background on the topics you will discuss in the essay.
Your introduction should end with a thesis statement, which is one sentence that guides the essay. The thesis tells the reader what the focus and purpose of the essay is. In this case, your thesis should convey that you are responding to a specific article, and your opinion should be included, as well.
Body Paragraphs: The way you organize your body paragraphs is up to you; however, there are some options. You can spend a couple of paragraphs first summarizing and quoting from the Tufekci article, and then spend the other paragraphs discussing your perspective; or you can go point by point, and show your perspective alongside points in the article.
Conclusion: The conclusion should restate your thesis in fresh, new language to remind the reader of what you’ve just written about, and it should bring closure to your essay and give the reader something to think about “on the way out.”
