Overview

High education scores among U.S. students have fallen off over the years and minority students in inner-city schools are particularly vulnerable to underperformance. Understaffing is a major issue contributing to this problem. One organization, however, is trying to change this. Teach for America (TFA) is a nonprofit training and placement organization with a mission to put more quality teachers into schools that need them the most. The organization seeks young, highly-qualified volunteers to teach at troubled inner-city schools for a period of two years before getting their ultimate careers. TFA places a special emphasis on diversity so that its teachers reflect the unique environment in which they will work. Forty percent of its teachers are people of color—African American, Latino, Asian, and Native American.

Wanting to ensure that it isn’t contributing to the problem, TFA has developed a rigorous recruitment and training process to ensure that it is placing only the best teachers into inner-city schools. In fact, only one out of every ten applicants is ultimately selected for the program. TFA’s vetting process is extensive. Applicants are interviewed by phone, must present a lesson plan, are interviewed in person, must pass a written test, and are monitored in a group discussion with other applicants.

Once selected, the recruits attend a five-week summer course to prepare them for the challenges and needs of the inner-city classroom environment and to ensure they are grounded in curriculum, lesson planning, and in building strong relationships with schools and the community. After the recruits are placed into a school, they continue to receive support and training to help them turn their at-risk students around and guide them toward success.

What draws people to want to work for Teach for America? Certainly the satisfaction of helping students succeed is a major factor, but TFA’s compensation package is unmatched in the field of public service. Unlike other volunteers that earn very little for their work, TFA teachers earn salaries comparable to other teachers in their grade level.

This combination of recruiting, selecting, training and compensating employees has proven to be a successful formula for Teach for America as evidenced by the growth of the program, the demand for its teachers, the 10,000 recruits it trains each year and the glowing reviews it receives from school principals.
