How can our understanding of perception help us become more effective communicators?
Perception is a process that requires individuals to use their senses in order to bring awareness to themselves about someone or something (What is Perception,2023). Perception allows people to gain a tremendous amount of information not only by seeing or hearing but actually using physical interaction like touching and tasting things as well. Communication is has 3 simple components that are vital to perception such as the cognitive the affectiveness and the behavior (The Communication Process, 1987). Most people have trouble with communication because they do not allow themselves to use the required senses in order to understand the next person. I personally believe that using your senses will allow you to get a better interpretation of what a person is saying. For example, I am “hard at hearing,” so I tend to misunderstand what a person is trying to say more often than usual. Overtime I realized that perception played a big part in the development of communication. Instead of just hearing what a person said I allowed my self to watch and pay close attention to a person’s body language actually allowed me to interpret what a person is really trying to say. this works for me because I am able to understand whether or not the person is angry or happy etc. With that being said using perception is effective when communication because it allows people to understand others, interpret and process information more effectively.
