Assignment 2.4: Debate: Societal Impact of Food Systems
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to foster a constructive debate about the societal
impact of food systems while practicing evidence based defense of opinions,
information literacy skills, and the ability to see another’s point of view.
The following quote is taken from one of the food justice assignment videos:
“When it comes to consumption, we’re often too judgmental about what one another eat. Those who eat healthy food are often perceived to be more moral or more self-disciplined than those who do not. Even as our definitions of which foods are healthy change over time. This isn’t new. Food historians have long chronicled the ways that middle class
food reformers have sought to change the eating habits of working class communities and new immigrant groups rather than working to improve their circumstances.” – Food as Radical Empathy, Alison Elkon
Write a substantive discussion post on your reactions to and thoughts about this quote
in light of what we have learned thus far in the semester regarding food systems,
nutrition, sociocultural influences and food justice. Does the quote ring true to you or not? Why or why not? How do your own beliefs about food, health and nutrition, food
systems and sustainability appear to you in the light of this quote? What are some
changes that you might make in the future or suggestions you have for others
advocating in the food systems/health/sustainability sphere?
Be specific about your examples and use evidence based resources to support your
statements and opinions. At lease three quality references are expected.
