The purpose of this assignment is to allow students to apply concepts and knowledge acquired through reading materials to a specific case. There will be four case study assignments throughout the semester.
Case Study Assignment 4
The case to be analyzed in this assignment is “The Plight of Public Employee Unions and Public Pensions”.
You can find the case on page 454 of the textbook. After reading the case please answer the following questions:
Do you think public employees run a risk of becoming more isolated from private-sector workers who don’t have pensions and aren’t in unions? Why? Why not?
What do you think of the unions using legal challenges in court as a primary strategy to achieve their goals?
What do you think of public employees receiving life-long defined benefit pensions? Do you think it places a burden on the younger taxpayer generations?
Find out, and share with the rest of the class, the kind of pension plans offered to the employees of your local government. What do you think about them?
