Identify a local, state, national or international issue that people are mobilizing around and retaining a distinct collective identity. Either through the media, or online, or through personal contact or experience, research the purpose and nature of the social movement and answer the following questions:
Is this an offensive or defensive social movement?
What are the political opportunities and who are the elite groups associated with this social movement?
What, if any, are international implications in regard to the social movement?
What are the existing structures upon which the movement is built?
Speculate on what part of the process (as defined by Jo Freeman, p. 459 in the text) the social movement is proceeding?
To what extent is technology being used to further the aims of the social movement?
What are some of the cultural frames utilized by the movement in terms of the existence of the problem, the window of opportunity, setting goals, and deciding on courses of action?
How attractive this social movement would be for you, i.e. would this be a movement that you would join? Why or why not?
