Answer the question to the best of your ability within the space constraints (2500 words). Essays will be marked on the clarity of the argument, the use of evidence, and engagement with the political science literature. You will be responsible for case-level research. I expect the case-level research to include at least four newspaper and/or scholarly journal articles. You can select the cases you choose to study within Latin America, Africa, or Russia. In addition to case research, you will have to engage with the existing theoretical work on the subject. I expect you to engage with at least one theoretical piece. To get you started I have provided one useful theoretical piece (down below) for each question. Feel free to bring in any other theoretical texts you find useful when answering the question.
