Students must write and submit a term paper that discusses an issue related to crime in Canada from a criminological perspective. The aim of this assignment is that students examine the issue from an unbiased, academic point of view, based on scientific research, findings, and conclusions.
Term papers must fulfill the following requirements: 1. Selection of an issue related to crime in Canada
For the purposes of this assignment, an issue related to crime in Canada may be any of the following:
• A crime event perpetrated in Canada.
• A Canadian crime pattern, crime trend, or crime series.
• A social matter associated with crime or criminal justice in Canada.
2. Provide a description of the selected issue
The paper must include a brief but comprehensive description of the selected issue. Use at least two Canadian newspaper articles from reputable sources as references in your description of the issue. Media accounts should be conveyed as such, and not as fact.
3. Provide a discussion of the selected issue
The main element of this paper will be your discussion of the selected issue from a criminological perspective. Contrast and draw connections between media accounts about the selected issue and relevant scientific peer-reviewed research, theories, concepts, and conclusions. Incorporate at least two relevant peer-reviewed academic articles in your discussion. Note any consistencies and/or inconsistencies between related criminological literature and media portrayals of the selected issue. Explain the contribution of criminological literature to our understanding of the issue. Be creative, original, and critical in your argumentation.
