In what ways do Powell’s assessments of North Carolina’s exploration, early settlement, and its development as a Proprietary Colony from 1663-1729 (chapters 2-3) lend support to Alan Watson’s contention that single and widowed women enjoyed a significant amount of independence and legal standing, while married women often became legal “nonentities?” Please explain.
