George Floyd was killed by officer Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Floyd’s death was captured by a witness using a cell phone. Most people only reflect upon the facts and circumstances of Mr. Floyd’s death, but there are few events in modern history as impactful to both the criminal justice system and to society as a whole. George Floyd’s murder became an international sensation. Thousands around the world protested George Floyd’s death in global display of solidarity.
Derek Chauvin was charged with, and convicted of, three separate homicide counts for George Floyd’s death. The social justice issues, criminal justice issues, and impacts of this case are still being felt in society today and will be for years to come. Fully analyzing the impact of this case would be very daunting, but addressing some of the major issues provides a unique look into the broad spectrum of criminal justice issues and their influences. Your final written assignment for the course requires you to look at a specific aspect of the Floyd case and assess various viewpoints and consequences. Your paper needs to be supported by at least five scholarly or credible sources which can be utilized from the classroom or through independent research.
In your paper,
Explain the facts of George Floyd’s arrest and death (e.g., briefly, what was he arrested for; how many police officers were on scene, facts of his passing, etc.).
Summarize a brief, professional history about the lead officer, Derek Chauvin.
Analyze the social unrest that occurred after Floyd’s death.
Support the analysis with scholarly or credible sources that explain the scale of the protests, specifically identifying cities and the impacts to areas that experienced civil unrest.
Analyze in detail how this case did not violate Amendment V’s prohibition against double jeopardy.
Summarize three major provisions of your choosing found in the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021.
Evaluate the civil settlement received by the Floyd family from the City of Minneapolis as a result of the actions of police officer Chauvin.
Identify whether this was a matter of state or federal law, and why.
Identify your opinion about the outcome of the Chauvin trial and the Floyd family settlement.
