Review currently published research on memory or intelligence. Discuss how the findings have changed our understanding on memory or intelligence. What do you think should be the next step in this research?
Peer response posts: a minimum of 1 paragraph (3-4 sentences)
Students can receive a maximum of 10 points for two peer responses
Responses should be thought-provoking and pertain to the information discussed in the initial post
Students are encouraged to bring insight, personal experience, or additional research to the discussions, when responding to peers
A list of references IS required for peer responses so students can further their knowledge on the subject.
STUDENT 1:
Based on the study based on implicit memory, the researchers found out that, “Although some of these studies seem to indicate the presence of mood congruent biases in implicit memory, others fail to show this effect. Although the studies differ on a variety of dimensions (participant population, sample size, implicit memory task, depressive status, etc.), a thorough review of the literature suggests that these are not the most important considerations in understanding the presence or absence of mood congruent memory biases in depression” (Barry et al., 2004, 387). Implicit memory, is memory where behavior is affected by past experiences without actually remembering that experience. An example is when someone learns how to write. Although that person could have forgotten the memories of learning to write, they still use that skill. In relation to implicit memory and the researcher’s findings, congruent biases are the over relines on initial hypothesis of a person while neglecting other options. The findings explain that previous studies about congruent biases found in implicit memory regarding depression varies but explains that those studies used different sample sizes, participant populations, etc. Therefore, we can see that there is a possibility where congruent biases is present in memory biases in depression. This entails that people who are suffering depression will hyper-focus on one reason why they are depressed or focus on why their situation will get worse while neglecting other options where they could feel better or improve their situation. Knowing this, the next step in this research is finding the connection between people’s memories and depression where we can isolate certain variable that make them feel depressed. Another step is to further study congruent biases in general where it could link towards depression.
