Theory – Critical race theory
1. Identify a social justice issue of interest to you (e.g. disparities in health care, education, housing, incarceration, child welfare).
2. Identify a population and analyze how racism and another form of oppression may intersect to impact the population in the experience of this issue/problem.
3. Conduct research on this social justice issue, using course materials, journal articles, and scholarly online sources. Your research should give you a solid foundation in sociohistorical contexts, related theoretical frameworks, current nature and scope of the issue, and its impact on individuals, families and communities.
4. Locate a national or local social service agency or organization in your area (e.g. homeless coalition, LGBT drop-in center, NAACP Chapter, center on aging, an organization for transgender parents, etc.) related to your area of interest. Make contact with the organization and set up a visit, interview, and/or attend a meeting or community event.
5. Write a 6-8 page paper that covers the following:
• Description of a social justice issue
• Brief history and explanation of the issue as it relates to your chosen population
• Current nature, scope and impact of the problem
• Application of theoretical framework
• Description of local agency or organization designed to address the issue, include social change strategies used. In so doing, assess the level at which agency interventions operate (micro, mezzo, and/or macro levels) and how an integrated approach might enhance their efforts.
• Analysis of your experience/impressions of the agency
• Personal reflections, reactions, triggers to this issue
• Suggestions/implications for the future
Guidelines
• Papers should be written in APA style format, which includes title page and reference page (not included in page count), headings, in-text citations, and scholarly tone.
• Use section headings to ensure you address each component of the paper
• Papers should be free from spelling and grammar errors.
• Please note: APA allows first person when the author is describing his/her own experience. Please reserve use of first person for sections of the paper that are specific to your personal reflections.
• Papers should include at least five scholarly sources, including the course textbook and peer-reviewed journal articles.
