Individual Assignment: Statement of Philosophy for Sport Management
Students will develop a personal statement of philosophy. This iterative process will culminate in
a written submission between 500 – 1,000 words.
This is an exercise in considering your individual purpose, vision and passion. As Sport Managers
you will often question what you are doing and why. You will question whether the role you are
in is satisfying and whether your passion is realised in the career you have chosen. Having a
statement of purpose or professional statement of philosophy will enable you to ground yourself
while doing service to others. While this statement will be graded for the purpose of this course,
you are advised to keep it close and re-examine it throughout your career, as it can assist with
making important decisions about your career and in your life.
Students should answer/complete the following questions/statements in preparation for
articulating their statement of philosophy:
1. How would you describe yourself? What are your character traits? Who are you at your core?
Pick 6-8 words to describe you being YOU; your best self?
2. Narrow it down. What are the top three or four character-traits that describe YOU?
3. When you are in your element,
a. what are you doing (verb phrase)?
b. For what reason?
c. For what outcome?
4. Complete this statement: I see myself living/building a purpose-driven business/life where I
am…
5. Who do you love being?
6. Who do you love serving?
7. What do you love to accomplish?
8. What do you enjoy doing for yourself and others?
9. What fires you up?
