George Jackson, a Black revolutionary and theorist, described fascism as an “episodically logical stage in the socio-economic development of capitalism in a state of crisis. Fascism is always a response to a threat to the establishment.” Think about the implications of this statement. Why would a state of crisis in capitalism produce appeals to “tradition” and “irrationalism,” amongst the other characteristics of fascism from the readings and our discussion in class? Is it fair to conclude that there is something inherent to capitalism (and liberalism) that makes fascism possible? Explain your answer.
