Popular Culture analysis – for this assignment, you are to choose any piece of popular culture (besides film) in which the city or urbanism plays a central role. Some examples, from the course, include music, street art, comic books, festivals, and television shows, but do not feel limited to these examples. Similar to the film analysis, you should write about how the piece you have chosen depicts and engages with course themes. While you should provide a short description of the piece you are analyzing, we are more interested in your critical analysis of the piece. Key questions to consider:
What role does the city play in this piece?
What is the creator/artist/author trying to communicate about urban life?
Who might the intended audience be? How do you know? Why might this matter?
How has this piece impacted your understanding of urban life?
You should not feel bound by these questions, but rather think of them as a set of ideas on how to approach your analysis. You are welcome to be creative with your approach, analysis, argument and format.
You must draw from at least 4 academic or scholarly sources; at least 2 of these must be a course reading. You may draw on non-scholarly, media sources to complement your academic sources.
You must correctly reference all sources from where you obtained your information – both in text and in a bibliography.
