1. You will write a Literature Review on any Communication Arts and Sciences topic.
a. Think narrow! Try to be very specific in what you are writing about. For example,
if you are interested in “Family Communication,” you can write specifically about
parent-child communication. If you are interested in “Intercultural
Communication,” you can write about classroom communication differences
between American students and Chinese students.
b. If you have trouble narrowing, think about what discipline within CAS you would
like to study: Organizational, Business, Interpersonal, etc.
2. Each paper needs to be AT LEAST 4-5 pages. Reference pages DO NOT count toward
page totals. Note: 3 ½ pages IS NOT 4 pages. Papers that do not reach minimum page
length will be considered incomplete and will not receive credit.
3. Each paper will require five (5) scholarly sources. This includes book, book chapters, and
scholarly journal articles found through the library website. NO INTERNET sources. The
internet is not scholarly. If you use the library’s website, remember to narrow via
“Scholarly and Peer Reviewed.”
4. You need a proper Reference page and proper in-text citations. Failure to use proper APA
citation is a form of plagiarism and will be treated as such. If the source is on your
Reference page it should be include somewhere in your paper as an in-text citation. If you
cite a source in-text, it should be on your Reference page.
5. Papers should include three sections:
a. Introduction – thesis and preview of paper (about ½ page)
i. Ex: “Family communication is an important topic. This essay will
summarize the current literature available on the topic of parent-child
communication.”
ii. “First, the theme….Second, the theme…Third….Finally…”
b. Body – summarize the literature. You probably need to break this section up into
3-4 themes (about 3-4 pages)
i. Remember: This is NOT one source summary after the next. DO NOT DO
THE FOLLOWING: “First, I read this book…Then I read this article that
said…Then I read a journal…”
ii. Organize the Body by themes
1. DO THIS: “There are lots of concepts that make up parent-child
communication…A common theme is….Another aspect of parent-
child communication is…”
c. Conclusion – Brief summary. Tell us what “gaps” are in the research. What
outstanding research questions might you ask or what is your hypothesis on the
issue? What current issues might be studied under this topic? (about 1 page)1. You will write a Literature Review on any Communication Arts and Sciences topic.
