You have been asked to write a short guide for aspiring naval architects. In the guide you must:
1. Discuss, in general terms, the role of the naval architect in the modern era and how their
contribution to the marine industry influences changes in the design of ships. Discuss why it is important for the naval architect to have access to casualty investigation reports issued following formal flag state investigations.
2. Explain the relationship between draught, air draught, freeboard and length between perpendiculars of a typical general cargo ship. Discuss how each of these values varies as the vessel moves from sea water to fresh water. Assume in your answer that the ballast condition remains unchanged throughout the period being considered.
3. Discuss the importance of an inclining experiment, when this should be performed, and the procedures followed to ensure an accurate result. Provide details of three conditions which would render the result of this experiment invalid and explain why this is so.
4. Provide an example calculation using the following information:
A vessel with a displacement of 45,000 tonnes, has a length between perpendiculars (LBP) of 220m,
and has a level draught of 12m. It has a waterplane area of 5,900m2, with its longitudinal centre of flotation 7m aft of amidships.
Determine the new draughts forward and aft if a weight of 400 tonnes is added 40m forward of the longitudinal centre of flotation. The longitudinal metacentre is 90m above the ship’s centre of gravity. Assume the water density is 1.025 tonnes/m3
