At the end of the semester, you are required to write a 4 – page paper (with a cover page and references) on your personal teaching philosophy. This document will serve as a starting place for you to articulate your theoretical framework and beliefs, as a teacher. There will be times in your career that you will be called upon to articulate your philosophy of education such as – on job applications, in the development of school philosophy and mission statements and when you are making decisions and determinations about children. This is a document you will revisit and revise throughout your teaching career.
Use the following questions as a guide and the rubric to help you think about your beliefs regarding teaching young children. Remember this is your philosophy as reflected on what you have learned in class, text, research, your personal experiences, and your future goals.
How do you view young children? What do you believe about how young children learn?
Looking back at the history of early childhood education, who or what approaches have made the greatest impression on you, and why? What learning theories have impacted your teaching philosophy?
How do you view the role of the teacher? How will your views influence your teaching?
What kind of environment do you hope to create in your future classroom/work setting? What does a developmentally appropriate classroom look like? Sound like, feel like?
Is it important to have an inclusive classroom? Why?
What kind of feedback will you offer your students as they work? What kind of assessments/observation will you use to be sure that students have met objectives?
How will you work with parents? Why is it important to have a family-friendly center?
Discuss concepts you have learned including: the domains of ECE, working with the whole child, DAP, integrated curriculum, use of learning centers, purpose/beliefs about play, guidance practices, assessments, working with parents and families, inclusion practices, your own personal experiences, and being an advocate for children.
