Please take into consideration the following vignette:
You are a Social Worker at a nonprofit that provides parenting education classes to parents that have lost custody of their children (children currently in foster care).
You are having your first meeting with a new client, John. He is a single parent, employed part-time but also receives social security benefits; he has family support and transportation but often unstable housing and inconsistent employment. He has recently lost custody of his 3 children because he left them home alone and one of the children was injured and subsequently hospitalized. At this point, you are unaware of the reasons why he left the children alone. John is motivated to regain custody of his children, but he is very upset and defensive about having to take any parenting education classes. As the Social Worker, you have limited information about John, but you walk into the room to have your first meeting. What do you do?
